ONGOING GROUP FOR STOCKHOLM 2017 - 2018

1 Year Foundation in Dance Movement Theatre

Rehearsal Stills

The Ongoing Group for 2017/18 came to completion in April 2018.  After a year of study, we opened the space to share work-in-progress with those interested in Spiderflower's approach to theatre.

In a magical celebration of Earth Day at Folkuniversitetet Stockholm, we explored Act 3, Scene 1 from the timeless and hilarious 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' through performance, a cast talk and participatory workshop.

Alongside working closely with Spiderflower's structure and technique during the course, actor / dancers also study the foundations of theatre from stagecraft, right through to characterisation and performance.

The text is chosen according to the chemistry of the group at the start of the year.  As the realm of theatre is so vast the text we choose will lend focus to a certain aspect of dance movement theatre.  2017-18 saw us explore how the language of GESTURE opens out characterisation, relationship and story in great detail and is an important conduit for the audience.

Each performer was given two contrasting characters from the world of faery and of the mechanicals to develop (barring Bottom played by Maria Lé Mon who has his own transformation), making an exciting progression for actor / dancers as they extended gestural movement naturally born through earth-based dance into characterisation then on to performance.

For this particular set, we chose to extend 2 well loved moments within the scene into a movement sequence in order to deepen the world of the character and storyline.  Bottom worked with 'A Study of Loneliness' at his point of transformation, whilst Titania + Bottom played with ' A Study of Courtship'.

Tackling Shakespeare as a first (ever in some cases) performance, particularly when Swedish is a first language is no mean feat - the cast worked beautifully to deliver an extraordinary performance.
