THE AVEBURY CYCLE
Year on Year Dances for Women
Held close to the ancient sites of Avebury in Wiltshire, UK - The Avebury Cycle offers dance space for women only, once a year, year on year. It is designed for women who walk a creative path and offers an open, breathable structure on an ongoing basis.
This is a space where women can dance hard, really rock and be authentic. It is a place of respect and wonder at the phenomenon we are. THE DANCE CYCLE
The dance cycle follows the pattern of a long, continual spiral rooted in the earth year. Turning on the wheel, a dance will change its theme and focus every year and echoes the meaning of the extra-ordinary place of Avebury. It moves in time with the rhythms of the season, a woman's life cycle and that of a dancer's own creative /personal story. Intricately layered, in time and in tune, this is our structure. The boat to carry the journey.
ONGOING SPIRAL
We are working with an ongoing spiral of events over an indefinite, extended period of time - which means - there is no end in sight. Dancers may join The Avebury Cycle at any point in time, continue for as long as they wish - and go on to repeat should they be moved to.
THE PLACE
Spiderflower has worked at Avebury since it began in 1999, and in a way it is home and heartbeat to the work. Such a large proportion of Spiderflower's make up has been inspired by the land and the ancient architecture here. We've had a special journey over many years. EVOLUTION
The Avebury Cycle has come to the end of its first 4 year cycle in its current structure. Spiderflower's work for women has been evolving since 1999 and has run classes, workshops, residentials and year courses since this time in the UK and overseas. This area of work is rich, well developed and organic. As we follow the journey, a gear shift takes place changing the shape of The Avebury Cycle once more.
TATTERED BUTTERFLY ARTS is due to take this body of work into performance with THIS HOLY ISLE. Dance movement theatre workshops are open for dancers who would like to contribute to research and development. SEE: THE RED TREE to be held at Avebury February 20th & 21st 2016.
