Spiderflower has always, and continues to work with live drum rhythm. The drum has been an intrinsic and valuable part of its work and delivers to a high standard.
There are times when drum ensemble is in play, but it is also important to vary. The simpler form of the medicine drum, silence and pre-recorded music also support the dance.
Pre-recorded music can only be used to a point. Where it is used it is through a quality sound system, but if the work really is to allow the true dance arising out of the impluse, what pre-recorded music can do it interfere with that process as tracks are already pre-described. It doesn't change, or work with the dancer as a drummer drumming the dance is able to do.
Spiderflower's preference is then to work with live music or no music. It's important for the dancer not to get dependent on the supply of music.
This is about reaching down deep, and pulling up your own beat.
